Frequently Answered Questions

What are RouteArrows?

Originally designed for cycle routes on events and tours, RouteArrows are 3” x 11.9” peel-n-stick paper arrows that come in rolls of 250 in eight High Visibility colors. They have a strong, non-toxic, water based adhesive to stick to any clean dry road pavement surface and being just paper, they will disintegrate from traffic wear, leaving no trace! See RouteArrows in our store!

What are RouteLines?

Our NEW PRODUCT! They are great for full and half marathon, triathlon, 5k races, or walking and cycling events too! RouteLines are made from the same non-toxic peel-n-stick paper material as RouteArrows. RouteLines come on a continuous (uncut) roll, 3” x 195’ long. You cut and size the material to suit your event’s needs such as Start/Finish lines, Big Arrows, Hazard marking, etc. They are currently available in our four most popular colors: Green, Yellow, Pink, and Orange!

How many RouteArrows do I need for my event?

We recommend 5 RouteArrows per turn. With 250 arrows per roll, that allows for up to 50 marked points per roll. Therefore, if you have more than say 42-45 turns per route, you should consider another roll of that same color.  You also need some RouteArrows at the start and as “affirmation” to say “you’re on route, keep going!”.  If your event has multiple cycle routes (use multiple colors) you can use 4 RouteArrow “clusters” per turn.  Be generous: never go below 3 RouteArrows or arrow clusters per turn.  Using more arrows per turn help your less experienced riders or runners feel well cared for.   Additional route marking instructions:  See the instructions here

Where is the best place (on the road) to place RouteArrows?

For cycle routes (on bike events) we strongly recommend placing RouteArrows Left of the White Line.  The road is smoother and cleaner here so the RouteArrows will stick the best and wear away the quickest. If there is a wide shoulder or a “Bike Lane” we still recommend placing RouteArrows LWL and not in the shoulder zone or bike lane. If there is no white line, place RouteArrows 1-3 feet left of the pavement edge, in the smoothest zone, so they will be worn away quickly.  Historically, it’s common practice to put painted route markings over near the road edge to allow the  paint to dry before it gets run over.  For the riders benefit and yours, place RouteArrows LWL where they grab the rider’s attention better and wear away sooner than off to the right.  Also, avoid placing RouteArrows on top of ANY white line or word (i.e. STOP) as they become much less distinct.  So, if RouteArrows are located LWL and the riders are in the bike lane, they’re both in the right place!  For additional route marking info see here.

How should RouteArrows be placed?

Place all turn indication RouteArrows at a 45 degree angle from direction of travel, either left or right.  This allows the cyclist or runner to distinguish the intended turn direction much sooner than with arrows placed at 90 degrees.  Place all other, (“affirmation” and “confirmation” arrows) parallel to the direction of travel.

What about Running events or walking events?

RouteArrows and RouteLines are also excellent for events such as half marathons, 5k races, walkathons etc. Unlike on bike rides, walkers and runners are moving slower so they need less notice time before the turn. We still suggest 5 RouteArrows per turn but they can be placed much closer to the turn than needed for cycle events. If you are using bigger RouteLines arrows 2-3 per turn is optimum.

Are these products safe for the environment?

YES!  Made with a mid weight paper stock, RouteArrows and RouteLines use non-toxic, water based ink and adhesive. I don’t necessarily recommend anyone eat them, (they taste bad!) but, at additional expense, we have chosen to make them with as safe a material as we could.

How many RouteArrows/RouteLines are on each roll?

There are 250 arrows (+/-) on each roll.  RouteLines are a continuous roll, 195′ long.  They are only sold in full rolls, no partial rolls.

How are RouteArrows and RouteLines applied?

RouteArrows are very quick and easy to apply!  Just peel them off their backing, tip first, then place them down one at a time and step on them repeatedly to assure a good bond with the pavement.  See instructions for complete How-To.  RouteLines are removed from the roll differently:  Cut the material into the desired length(s) by tearing it, don’t cut with scissors. The torn edge makes it easier to separate the paper from the backing. Place RouteLines sections as you would the RouteArrows, just be sure to use plenty of foot stomps to assure a good bond with the road surface.

Can I use RouteArrows on paved trails and Bike Paths?

Yes!  But we strongly recommend removal of RouteArrows and/or RouteLines from off-street bike paths, trails or sidewalks right after your cycling event or running event. Without traffic to wear them away, they can last for months and are seen as litter.  So please remove them.  See “Can they be removed” for more info.

Can they be removed? What if they need to be removed?

RouteArrows and RouteLines are a unique product designed to disintegrate from daily traffic. This cuts in half the time, effort, risk and fuel expense by not driving the route again.  But, if they must be removed (from paths, etc) there are two options. 1) Place them out of traffic so they won’t be as abraded and worn. Also, when placing them, fold the arrow tip under just a bit (1/4″) to create a ”Tab to Grab” then use your fingernail or a metal spatula to pull them up. This works best with “fresh”, undamaged arrows.   2) Use water!  Use this method if they are already well pressed down, well worn and many days old. Wet the arrow; use a rough soled shoe and scuff them with repeated foot kicks. A wire brush can work here also. This will turn the arrow into a little bit of innocuous mush.

How long do they last after being applied to the road?

RouteArrows and RouteLines are just paper, with non-toxic water based ink and adhesive. They are designed to disintegrate from traffic wear, when properly located.  The volume of traffic, the weather, and their location on the street greatly affects their life span. If they stay dry and see light traffic, it can take many weeks until they fully disintegrate. But, if they are exposed to heavy traffic they will be worn away in just days.  If they get wet, (moderate rain) their lifespan can be just hours with moderate traffic.  The colors will naturally fade to white from daily sun exposure.

What is the shelf-life of RouteArrows?

The manufacturer recommended shelf life is 6 months. Use your RouteArrows/RouteLines within this timeframe for optimum performance. Store RouteArrows/RouteLines in a sealed container, preferably in a climate-controlled environment to prolong their shelf-life.

How far in advance should/can they be placed?

For optimum results, place RouteArrows and RouteLines within 24 hours of the event. Placing them many days in advance will greatly reduce their visibility because of traffic wear and weather exposure. Remember, the marking crew will require less time, compared to using other outdated methods such as paint or duct tape.

What if it rains on or before the event?

After being placed on dry roads, RouteArrows and RouteLines will survive a mild to moderate rain assuming very light traffic. If your event historically experiences lots of rain, RouteArrows might not be the best route marking method for you.  RouteArrows and RouteLines will not survive moderate to heavy rain when placed out in traffic.  But, if rain is forecast just before or on your event, place RouteArrows or RouteLines (on dry roads) out of the traffic pattern to increase their lifespan.

Will they stick to wet roads?

RouteArrows and RouteLines adhere to clean dry paved roads, they will not stick to wet or very damp roads.

Will they stick to dirt roads, gravel or grass?

In a word, no.  So consider using our RouteSigns!  See them in the online store.  RouteSigns are blank plastic “Coroplast” 16″ x 16″ x 5 mil, Black squares, allowing you to use RouteArrows in non-pavement locations, or at route splits. The black really adds “POP” to the bright RouteArrows. Two stakes included per sign. Available in bundles of 5, 10 and 20.

How long does delivery take?

We ship RouteArrows and RouteLines via UPS standard ground. Please allow at least 10 business days prior to your event for delivery.  Processing takes 1-2 business days. Shipping to East Coast locations takes 1-3 business days, shipping to mid-US locations takes 3-5 business days and shipping to West Coast locations takes 5-7 business days. Expedited shipping is available.  Please see Shipping Information for more details. How many/What colors are available?

RouteArrows come in eight high visibility colors! Red, Orange, Yellow, Lime, Green, Blue, Purple and Pink!   RouteLines come in the four most popular colors, Yellow, Green, Pink and Orange!

Can I order custom printing or custom colors?

We do not have custom colors or custom (logo) printing on either RouteArrows or RouteLines. We are working on a customizable non-directional label for release later this year.

How much do RouteArrows and RouteLines cost?

RouteArrows come in rolls of 250 that are $76 per roll (+S&H) RouteLines are $75 per 195’ long roll. (+S&H)  Consider cost per rider:  Events with 500 riders that use three rolls  (have 3 routes) spend under 50 cents per rider.  RouteLines‘ cost per event will vary (depending on # of rolls) but it is less than 45 cents per foot. Consider a roll of Green for the start/finish line(s)  and a roll of Orange for Hazard Marking.

Who invented these RouteArrows and RouteLines?

I (Randall Braun) envisioned RouteArrows  back in the late 80′s, seeing so many century events struggle with their route marking and from my experiences with the Davis Bike Club and their Foxy Fall and Double Century. I finally brought RouteArrows to market in early 2007 and RouteLines in early 2014!  See “About” for the complete story!
