This week's RouteHero is... BikePGH!
Our newest RouteHero is a Pittsburgh based cycling advocacy non-profit organization that focuses on education and getting their community members outside and active! Other big cities - take notes!
Bike Pittsburgh is working hard on "transforming our streets and communities into vibrant, healthy places by making them safe and accessible for people to bike and walk”.
What we found inspiring was their stated core values: Health and Livability, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Creativity, Strength, Sustainability, and (a large dose of) FUN!
On August 25th, 2019 they are hosting their 26th annual PedalPGH event, Pennsylvania's Largest Charity Bike Ride! About 3000 participants enjoy “a casual, fun ride that introduces people of all ages and fitness levels to the unique neighborhoods, parks, bridges, and geography that make Pittsburgh so special. As a fundraiser PedalPGH enables BikePGH to continue to transform our streets and communities into vibrant, healthy places by making them safe and accessible for everyone to bike and walk.” What a great thing!
In addition to great events like Bike to Work Day and OpenStreetsPGH, they have numerous ways people can get involved, from starting a neighborhood bike/ped committee to taking classes on “bike self-reliance and confidence building for a more enjoyable ride”.
We also admire their WMNBikePGH program that “encourages conversation and provides spaces to come together over biking, advocacy and related topics while increasing representation of people who have historically marginalized gender identities”. Check out their Women & Non-Binary Forum!
We truly love seeing organizations like BikePGH put so much effort towards getting people out to enjoy and appreciate their local walking and biking routes!
